Block Printing Workshop
Sunday, 1:00–2:30 PM

Discover the art of block printing in this hands-on mini workshop! We’ll start by exploring how block printing works—focusing on the process of carving away material to create negative space in your design. After a short demo, you’ll create your own block print using easy-to-carve rubber. Design and carve a custom stamp that you can use again and again—and yes, you get to take it home!

Please note: This class involves the use of sharp cutting tools and is recommended for ages 10 and up—participants should be able to safely handle carving tools.

All materials are provided, but supplies are limited.

Cost: Free!

Saturday - May 17 · Sunday - May 18
Saturday & Sunday at 2pm

About the Activity: Join painter, material researcher and educator Elisabeth Heying for a 30 minute crash course on paintmaking! This interactive demo will begin by passing around material samples and learning the basics of pigments, binders and paint. Next, you will see a live demonstration and observe how raw colorants and natural adhesives can transform into paint mediums that have been used by humans since ancient times. To close out the activity, we will have a rapid fire Q & A! Part show and tell, part cooking show, part chemistry lesson, this demo will leave attendees with a deeper understanding of the materials and techniques of paintmaking and an appreciation for the abundant natural materials available to us in the world.

Where: Holland Arts East Gallery

When: Saturday & Sunday at 2pm

Who: Children, adults, artists, non-artists, curious thinkers, rock collectors, researchers, people who like to know what things are made of, nature lovers, DIYers, appreciators of pretty things, and probably everyone else, too.

About the teacher: Elisabeth’s interdisciplinary practice explores material meaning and the connection between painting, pigment and place. She recently accomplished her 2023-2024 Fulbright project in Cyprus where she created an archive of pigments and a body of paintings investigating the material and embedded narratives in the local landscape, and fulfilled a kindred project in Santiago, Chile from 2022 to 2023. She was the founding director of StudioLab at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) where she educated students on the materials and techniques of painting from 2016 to 2022. She earned her MFA in Painting & Drawing from SAIC in 2022, and serves on the board of the nonprofit Pigments Revealed International.
