Art has always been a part of my life. Since childhood, I’ve found ways to bring creativity into everything I do. Growing up, I never considered art as a career—no one around me did it professionally, so it simply didn’t seem like an option. It wasn’t until college that I began thinking about art more seriously. Unsure of what career path to take, I filled my schedule with art classes. While majoring in Sociology, I ended up taking enough courses to minor in Studio Art.
Even as I worked in various nonprofits across the Twin Cities, I still didn’t see art as a viable profession. I created for myself, but it wasn’t until 2020 when I finally had more time at home that I started applying for open calls and sharing my work publicly. I wanted to bring my ideas to life and share what was inside my mind.
Acrylic paint, printmaking and digital illustration.
I’ve been actively working as an artist since around 2020. The lockdown gave me more time outside of my full-time job to focus on my artwork and put myself out there.
Northeast Minneapolis was my home in the past and remains a place where I frequently spend my leisure time. Whether I’m exploring local restaurants or connecting with shops that showcase my art, Northeast Minneapolis embodies a sense of home and comfort to me.
I’ve been participating in Art-A-Whirl since 2022, and honestly, it has opened the door to so many incredible opportunities. The connections I’ve made through NEMAA and Art-A-Whirl have played a huge role in my journey. I truly don’t think I’d be where I am today without them.
In 2023, I was honored to create the cover image and theme for Art-A-Whirl. This opportunity introduced me to so many incredible artists and people in the arts community. Seeing my artwork displayed everywhere was both surreal and deeply rewarding. It was truly a beautiful experience!
I wish more people realized just how diverse the Minneapolis arts scene is. It’s something you can’t fully grasp until you step into different creative spaces and connect with people outside your own circle.
Art-A-Whirl has changed so much since I lived in Northeast from 2015 to 2017. I remember it being much more condensed, but over the past decade, it has grown and expanded tremendously. Now, you can go almost anywhere in Northeast and experience some form of art.
As someone who never set foot in an art museum until college and didn’t realize art could be a career, I know how important the art community is in showing others like me what’s possible. It has the power to inspire, create opportunities, and bring people together.
I grew up in Gaylord, MN, in a community where art wasn’t present in public spaces. There were creative people, because creativity exists everywhere, but without support or opportunities, there was no way for them to truly flourish. I can’t imagine Northeast without its arts community; it would feel so mundane. Artists and creative minds will always exist, but without opportunities, many might leave or see their passions fade.
I think making Minneapolis a more bike- and walk-friendly city would be amazing. Prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists over cars would be ideal—especially since parking during Art-A-Whirl is nearly impossible!
I love being able to bring color and life to spaces. Color has always made such an impact in my life and really makes me feel ALIVE.
This project is made possible through a generous gift from the Minneapolis Foundation.
