Botanical printing is a form of bundle dyeing where textiles are tightly bundled with plants and steamed; releasing naturally occurring tannins, pigments, and acids to create one-of-a-kind prints. In this introductory class, students will learn how different mordants influence the colors produced, and the best technique for creating crisp prints from local foliage.
Students will print a silk and wool scarf using only leaves and flowers. While our bundles steam, we will look at more examples and take questions before the un-bundling and big reveal. We’ll finish by dipping our prints into an indigo bath to add another layer of natural beauty! Instructed by Mattie Ernst of Earnest Threads.
