My love of gemstones began during my childhood while hunting for agates and thomsonites on the north shore of Lake Superior. In the 1970’s I became hooked on glass too, and started collecting vintage and unusual beads while traveling. I started making my own art glass beads, enhancing them with 22K gold and fine silver leaf, dichroic glass, and encasing. I find this layering of visual elements and making shapes and mixing colors to be very seductive. I combine these colorful, beautiful shapes with stamped and torched copper, hammered sterling, quality gemstones, Austrian crystals and unique treasures I’ve collected while traveling the world. While designing I focus on color, balance, beauty, wearability, timelessness and quality. My pieces are comfortable to wear and durable.
I appreciate quality, good design, craftsmanship, and beauty, coming from a family of creative entrepreneurs and antique collectors. I studied Design at the University of Minnesota, and Jewelry Design and Photography at Minneapolis Community Technical College among many other places. I’ve been a self-supporting artist doing art shows for over thirty-five years.
I make Earrings, Bracelets, Necklaces, Pendants, and also accept commissions.
Dakota Mae Design is open on Friday, Saturday & Sunday of Art-A-Whirl weekend.
