My identity is shaped by many aspects beyond being an Ecuadorian immigrant and an artist. Here are a few that might be important to share: As a Community Leader & Mentor, my work not only beautifies spaces but also inspires and supports other artists, especially younger generations. As a Cultural Storyteller, my art reflects heritage, history, and social issues, making me a bridge between cultures. As a Musician, my connection to music adds another layer to my creative expression.
Art has always been a part of my life. I pursued it professionally because it allows me to express ideas, connect with people, and transform public spaces. Since graduating in 1990, I have dedicated myself to creating murals, sculptures, and other forms of public art that engage communities and tell meaningful stories.
I am a multimedia visual artist, working with murals, sculptures and public art indoors and outdoors. I am also involved in music festivals and music projects as a community expert.
I have been working as an artist for 34 years, since graduating in 1990.
My biggest inspirations come from my Ecuadorian heritage, the vibrancy of community life, and the power of public art to transform spaces. I am influenced by history, nature, music, and the stories of the people around me. Murals and sculptures allow me to blend these inspirations into something meaningful, creating art that connects with communities and sparks conversations.
Northeast Minneapolis has a significant Ecuadorian community, which makes it feel like home in many ways. Additionally, I run my own art studio in NE Minneapolis, where I create and showcase my work.
Art-A-Whirl is the biggest open studio art event in the U.S., and being part of it in the heart of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District is an incredible opportunity. It allows me to showcase my work to a large and diverse audience, connect with art lovers, and be discovered by new collectors and supporters. The best part is having so many people pass through my studio, engaging with my art and sharing their experiences.
One of my favorite memories from Art-A-Whirl was stepping outside to grab something from my car and seeing the streets completely alive with people. There was an incredible energy—crowds of people pouring into buildings, exploring studios, and engaging with the art. It was a mix of mostly young people, but also a great variety of visitors, all coming together to celebrate creativity. That moment really stood out to me because it showed just how powerful and unifying art can be.
Being a NEMAA member has meant connectivity and support—being part of a community where hundreds of creative minds come together with a shared passion and effort. I value the sense of belonging, the opportunities to showcase my work, and the collaboration that helps artists grow and thrive in Northeast Minneapolis.
I wish more people knew how much potential there is for public art in Northeast Minneapolis. It would be amazing to see more murals, sculptures, projections, and live music events throughout the streets—on every building and every corner—so that art is truly woven into the city’s identity. Public art has the power to heal and inspire, and making it more visible and accessible would strengthen Minneapolis’ reputation as a creative and vibrant city.
It’s amazing to think that Art-A-Whirl and NEMAA are turning 30! Every year, I’ve seen Northeast Minneapolis evolve, with more businesses and new creative spaces emerging alongside the artistic energy. The area is becoming a true cultural hub—a mecca for the arts in Minneapolis—where creativity and community continue to grow together.
Art is essential to our community because it brings people together, sparks conversations, and creates a sense of identity and belonging. It has the power to heal, inspire, and transform public spaces, making them more vibrant and welcoming. Art also supports cultural expression and keeps stories alive, ensuring that diverse voices are seen and heard. By making art accessible, we strengthen our connections and build a more creative and engaged community.
I can’t imagine Northeast Minneapolis without its arts community. Art is a vital part of our lives—it brings creativity, energy, and identity to the area. Without it, the community wouldn’t be as rich, vibrant, or connected.
The arts make this neighborhood unique, and without them, it would lose much of its soul and character.
In the next 30 years, I hope to see Art-A-Whirl, NEMAA, and the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District continue to grow in inclusivity and diversity. I look forward to attending many future events that celebrate a wide range of voices and cultures. I would love to see more art schools, creative spaces, programs, and opportunities for emerging artists and entrepreneurs. One of my dreams is to create an ‘Art Mall’—a dedicated space for artists to showcase and sell their work year-round. And of course, I hope to see even more public art filling the streets, making art an even greater part of everyday life.
If I could make one big change in Northeast Minneapolis, it would be to create more pedestrian-friendly streets filled with art and community spaces. I’d love to see fewer cars and more people walking, biking, and engaging with their surroundings. Imagine streets transformed into vibrant art corridors, lined with murals, sculptures, and creative spaces where people can gather, connect, and experience art in their daily lives.
I love being an artist because it allows me to contribute to the beauty of cities and public spaces while enriching the lives of so many people. Through my work, I strive to create spaces that feel safe, welcoming, and healing. I also want to give the community a voice—an opportunity to express themselves and be heard through art. Seeing how art can inspire, connect, and transform a place is what makes this work so meaningful to me.
We need to start thinking about future generations—not just the youth, but also young children—who deserve the opportunity to be creative and grow with art. It’s important to give them the space and support to explore their creativity from an early age, whether through schools, community programs, or public initiatives. Investing in art education and accessibility will ensure that the next generations can continue to express themselves, innovate, and shape the future of our communities.
This project is made possible through a generous gift from the Minneapolis Foundation.
