Directory profile: Patricia Canney
I paint the places, and people from my own experience and history.
The interior and gament pieces are figurative without the figure.
The interior space offers a structure that gives me a compositional skeleton to
work with. I like the intimate quality of an interior; its human-sized. The
viewer can place themselves right in the room, or seated on the chair or bed,
or in the garment.
I have visited dressmakers studios, a theater costume shop
and always looked for certain kinds of store front windows. I have collected some vintage dresses
and they evoke even more response. I love the costumes on manikins. They evoke
fantasy, dreams, memories...the whole idea of a costume, masking becoming
reality is pretty interesting. The dressmaker/tailor was also a part of my own experience.
My grandmother worked as a tailor in an old-fashioned mens clothing store, so
I have memories of that haberdashery smell of a steam iron on wool!
