Sydney Newman was born into a world surrounded by artists. From early age, she explored artistic forms, gravitating towards three dimensional mediums initially taking shape in the form of stacked cardboard sculptures and puzzle piece meets fast-food toy collages. In her late teens, Sydney took her first leap into ceramics – a move that led to a lifetime passion for the process and all of its uncertainty.
As an emerging ceramic artist, Sydney enjoys exploring the abilities of clay, pushing it to the furthest point physics will allow. Her work focuses primarily on volume created through organic manipulations applied to each unique piece after it has been thrown on a traditional pottery wheel.
In her day to day, she works as a mentor and networker for hundreds of international students. Sydney Newman holds an MA in African Studies from Stanford University and a BA in Political Science from Gustavus Adolphus College. She currently resides in Brooklyn, New York, where she is inspired by the intersection of nature and architecture, and creates in a local communal studio.
Sydney Newman is open on Friday, Saturday & Sunday of Art-A-Whirl weekend.
