Sydney Newman was born into a world surrounded by artists. From early age, she explored artistic forms, gravitating towards three dimensional mediums initially taking shape in the form of stacked cardboard sculptures and puzzle piece meets fast-food toy collages. In her late teens, Sydney took her first leap into ceramics — a move that led to a lifetime passion for the process and all of its uncertainty.
As an emerging ceramic artist, Sydney enjoys exploring the abilities of clay, pushing it to the furthest point physics will allow. Her work focuses primarily on volume created through organic manipulations applied to each unique piece after it has been thrown on a traditional pottery wheel.
Sydney’s signature style most often comes in the form of undulating porcelain vases and stoneware mugs called the Jellybeans — named after their wiggly and colorful appearance!
Sydney Newman holds an MA in African Studies from Stanford University, a BA in Political Science from Gustavus Adolphus College, and is pursing a JD at Fordham University of Law. She currently resides in Brooklyn, New York, where she is inspired by the intersection of nature and architecture, and creates in a local communal studio.
