Forage: Blueberries

The Forage series continues! Blueberries are a treat that can be found in northern Minnesota in July and August. They like to grow near water. No wonder they thrive in the land of 10,000 lakes.

I painted the background first on this one. I love letting the watercolor create interesting edges and textures. The second step was to draw the blueberries in pen. The last step took the most time. It was to use a combination of watercolor ground and watercolor paint to add color and solidity to the leaves, stems, and berries. There are many layers there. This sat unfinished on my art table at home for a long time. I am pleased to be able to share it now.

The original painting is on 16 in. x 12 in. watercolor paper. It is unframed.
