Devoted to the art and philosophy of painting, Sarah Vanasse Miles works in the field of realism while playing with its impact on abstract figurative work. Her multidisciplinary approach to contemporary painting is evidenced in her work on both large and small scales. Her work is influenced by religious iconography such as the work of Van Orley, Rublev, and other 15th and 16th century artists; post-impressionist masters like Paul Cézanne; and female artists throughout history: Elaine DeKooning, Lee Krasner, Tracy Emin, Frida Kahlo, and Jordan Casteel. Miles primarily focuses on oil painting using impressionist methods.
Miles’s studio is based in her hometown of Fairmont, MN. She shows her work in southern Minnesota as well as the Twin Cities metro area. She is part of the Saint Paul Artist Collective and Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association. Her most recent exhibition was a solo show hosted by the Red Rock Center for the Arts displaying over 32 paintings and drawings spanning the past 5 years of her work. Formally educated in the field of theology, Miles is a self taught artist. She acknowledges the helpful instruction of friends and family along her artistic journey.
