Watermark Milkweed

A photo I took at Watermark Art Center in Bemidji was the reference for this painting. I decided to make the background reddish-orange to contrast the green plant. In nature, red is often the color of something poisonous, and milkweed sap is poisonous to most mammals. It is the sole food source for Monarch butterflies. In my research I learned that by eating the sap of this plant, Monarch butterflies make themselves poisonous to most of their predators. Examples of how nature is interconnected are so interesting to me.

This acrylic painting is on stretched canvas that is 20″ x 30″. The frame is gray with a black inner edge.
