I could feel it in the air long before it came, a humid stickiness made heavier by the heat. No birds sang. The wind was conspicuously absent. Knowingly, my eyes rose to the horizon. Dark blue clouds loomed. A wall of vapor roiled forward with all the unbridled energy of wind from the open plains, the hot humidity of summer and the unseen pressures compressing and expanding the air around it. I paused, for there is an awesome beauty in the uncontrollable, the things in life which evoke the acute sense of one’s own smallness.  But it was time to seek shelter knowing that in the aftermath there may be damage and loss, but also lush and rewarding growth.
