Sos Boes – Merdules & Boes

Sos Boes – Merdules & Boes

Original pencils on paper 14″ x 17″.

The intriguing Ottana Carnival is still similar to the original rite. “Su Boe” (the Ox) is one of the main characters. He wears white sheep skins and a chiseled pear wood bovine mask with a black women’s headscarf on his head and carries a bronze cowbell bunch on his back. “Sos Merdules” walk the street in a disorderly and rowdy parade, keeping tied “Sos Boes” with a rope while trying to cool his fury and indiscipline using “su mazzoccu”, a peculiar stick and “sa soca”, a leather whip. “Su Boe” rebels and goes for his master, trying clumsily to avoid aggressions and whiplashes: he snorts, kicks and bellows, at least he falls down exhausted.
