Siberian Squill
Flower size: about 1 inch across when fully open
Scientific name: Scilla Siberica
Other common names: Wood squill
Native to Southwestern Russia, the Caucasus, and Turkey
Considered invasive in Northeast, Midwest, and Great Lakes Region of the U.S. and throughout Eastern Canada
Siberian squill is one of the earliest Spring ephemerals. It is not actually from Siberia. People adore it, despise it, and fight bitterly about it on the internet. It can turn a whole lawn into a dense, electric blue carpet for three weeks in April. Its pollen is dark blue. Its cousin, Chionodoxa (Glory of the Snow), bears a striking resemblance to Siberian squill but is not invasive.
