Scratchboard Etching/Mr. Akimbo
This is a scratchboard etching measuring 15.75″ wide by 17.75″ length. It is professionally framed and was created in 2012.
Mr. Akimbo is a character created when practicing shape contours. I drew a cone and then added arms and eyes. I think he illustrates the frustration of limited movements, he cannot extend his arms, he can only move his arms in a spinning movement, like a propeller. This results in a permanent sense of frustration which is illustrated in the eyes.
The scratchboard is an intermittent medium for me, for when I have hankering to etch. The substrate is a wood or masonite board, coated with a very fine coat of plaster or marble dust and then finished with a couple thin coats of india ink. The artist etches through the india ink layer to reveal the white below. I am building a scratchboard collection/gallery and will post the finished pieces on this shop, however, this is one of my first creations in scratchboard.
