Minnesota: What You Need to Know

Minnesota: What You Need to Know  is a hand-printed silkscreen. The image size is 16″ by 22″. The paper size is 20″ by 24″. The image is printed on Stonehenge, a cream colored paper that is archival. This silkscreen is available unframed and shrink wrapped or framed with an  archival mat that matches the paper and a frame with UV filtering glass.

This map is a compendium of interesting and arcane information about Minnesota. It lists large roadside Paul Bunyans, Voyageurs and other folk along with oversized animals. It includes interesting town festivals, Capitals of the World (Rutabaga Capital, etc.), Museums, Inventions, Races, Threshing Events, Garden Tractor Pulls, Scenic Drives, Truss Bridges and Variety Stores – the backbone of small town America. Last but not least it includes natural disasters, tornadoes by year and category, Implement Dealerships, Ghost Towns and Donut Shops.

This silkscreen was completed at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. It is a 6-color serigraph. The initial layer, the black, is drawn with black ink on tracing vellum and then scanned into the computer where it is touched up. Each of the other layers is drawn on the computer using a mouse. The layers are printed on clear mylar and photo-shot onto prepared silkscreens. The colors are printed in order, light to dark, with the black layer printed last.  Hand-printed silkscreens are multiple originals. This lithograph has a limited edition of 125 with 3 Artist’s Proof. Each one is an original.

Minnesota: What You Need to Know received an Honorable Mention at the Minnesota State Fair Fine Art Exhibition in 2013 and has also been in a number of exhibitions including Minnesota Funk at the Katherine E Nash Gallery at the University of Minnesota and  Minnesota Surrealists, a two-person exhibition at the Hopkins Center for the Arts.

It is currently featured in an online exhibition for the First Unitarian Society’s “Art in the Gallery” program at www.fusgallery.org.
