Su Merdule Mask – Boes & Merdules
Original charcoal and pencils on paper 11″ x 14″.
Black frame.
The Merdules is one of the distinctive masks (“caratza” in Sardinian) of the traditional carnival of Ottana that represents the guardian of the oxen.
Generally, the mask has the features of the face of a deformed man, with a grinning mouth. Whether it is due to the fatigue of work and life in the fields or to old age, these features make each mask unique and particular, leaving those who see them for the first time surprised and curious.
Made of wood and entirely by hand, they can be simple, linear, or angular, with thick eyebrows representing different men and stories.
Giclée Fine Art prints are also available.
