Men under the mask – Mamuthones

Original acrylic on canvas 30″x 40″.

The profound meaning of this very ancient play is shared by the whole community.

That is why dressing a Mamuthone is not a game but a vocation: if you are a Mamuthone you cannot be an Issohadore, that will be forever.

The Mamuthones wear a black wooden anthropomorphic mask made from alder or pear, with either a tragic or an emotionless expression and prominent nose, lips, and cheekbones to transfigure the human appearance. On a moleskin or velvet suit, they wear a typical Sardinian sheepskin jacket. On su bonette, a masculine hat, they wear su muncadore, a brown or garnet women’s headscarf.

They also wear the typical Sardinian shepherd’s shoes. On their back, they carry a 30-kilo cowbell bunch, whose bells are tightly tied by many leather laces. around their neck, they carry another smaller cowbell bunch.

Giclée Fine Art print also available.
