Hoar Frost

There is a silence in the cold of winter. It is palpable as much as an absence of something can be described as such. I become more aware of it when it is broken by the soft whoosh of an owl’s wings, a cacophony of feathers. Yet the quiet returns just as quickly. My breath freezes on my lips like the ice crystals on limb and twig, telephone wire and owl feather. I will not tarry here long, for the cold seeks silence at any cost.
