Ghost Trees

This painting evolved out of my exploration of deforestation and its impacts on the ecosystem that trees support. I had just read The Overstory by Richard Powers and was immersed in the world of trees and the loss that arises from deforestation,  both within a community of trees and the creatures they shelter.  As I was thinking of the tree trunks as ghost-like, I decided to paint them white. This enhanced the sense of presence despite their absence. It is only as an afterthought that we notice the stumps beneath them.
