Emily
“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all –
And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –
And sore must be the storm –
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm –
I’ve heard it in the chillest land –
And on the strangest Sea –
Yet – never – in Extremity,
It asked a crumb – of me.
This is the first thing I ever read of Emily Dickinson, and it deeply touched me, in early 2021 when the Russian assault on Ukraine had just started and I was feeling the weight of the world heavily. Emily carried heavy burdens herself, and her poem inspired me to start making my little hopeful and healing bird series – and it keeps on inspiring me and my work.
