A lone ponderosa pine marks the spot; a beacon on the horizon. Each night he saunters past and down the hill. He will sleep there, curled nose to tail. All creatures seem gentle and calm while wrapped in the shroud of slumber, but come dawn he will rise, lift his great hulk and shake his woolly head. Horns glinting in the early sun, it will be clear he is no gentle beast. But this morning he finds no challenge and slowly ambles toward the pine, the prairie grasses parting before him like waves under the prow of a great ship.
