Big Leaf Lupine
Flower size: ½ inch
Scientific name: Lupinus polyphyllus
Other common names: large-leaved lupine, many-leaved lupine, blue-pod lupine, marsh lupine, Washington lupine
Native to moist areas of Western North America
Invasive in New England, parts of Europe, Argentina, parts of New Zealand, and around Lake Superior
Brought from the West to the midwest by gardeners, this lupine, though not classified as a noxious weed, has become controversial on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Many residents, visitors and photographers love it for its beauty. Others consider it an environmental threat because it competes with, and interbreeds with, the native blue wild lupine, which provides food for the endangered Karner blue butterfly.
