Aretha
I was floored by the irrepressible spirit and sense of humor expressed in Aretha Franklin’s face, in this photograph from the early sixties. My painting is an homage and just an approximation, but it was fascinating to dive into the details of this captivating face.
Aretha had the guts and the sense to ask to be paid before her act was over. She also wrote her own material and got her sisters to sing background – in a music world ruled by white men.
