Witnessing Waves series

The Mississippi River Gorge and her wealth of heritage trees has always intrigued, inspired, and comforted me. This series pays respect to these gentle witnesses of migration and settlement along our mighty river, these magnificent, steadfast trees. The trees acknowledge the contribution of all of our respective backgrounds and ancestries. Our families have all traveled to this place, the Twin Cities. It is our collective heritage that makes our community a culturally rich and diverse place to call home. The trees welcome all, without discrimination. It is my hope that we all become like the trees. The series, Witnessing Waves, is currently 26 paintings deep, with fresh ideas arriving continuously.

The series is imbued with symbolism. DNA strands weave along the river banks and through the roots and ground, reminding us of our connections with all, whether it is nature or each other. The individual squares, thousands of squares, are our opportunities. We can choose to interact, or choose to ignore, there are a myriad of options to explore.

Animated Discussions, Lively Conversations, 48” x 60”. Located near the West River Parkway in South Minneapolis, this once forgotten oak savanna is once again being nurtured, and in turn, she nurtures us. Exceptionally diverse ecosystems are found within the savanna. This special place bridges the northern part of the gorge, home to the heritage bur oak with the southern portion of the gorge immediately before the confluence with the Minnesota River, just south of Cold Water Spring. These trees welcome the new arrivals, and share their generous bounty with all, and encouraging lively conversations as well as animated discussions, as the importance of communication is paramount.
