THE ART OF PHAEDRA ODELLE
Surreal, ethereal, and sensuously playful
Some people tell stories on paper. I tell stories with paper.
I’m drawn to natural elements in unnatural settings. It creates an enchanted quality that resonates with psyches, dreams, and memories. I’m also intrigued by gateways, doorways, portals of any kind. They hint at the possibility that something in life will change, expressing hope, potential, and power, while confronting fears of the unknown.
I create a wholeness and integrity out of things that don’t belong together. Found objects from magazines, encyclopedias, books…anything that has an image holds possibility. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle but the pieces aren’t boxed up, they’re out there waiting for me to find the right ones to tell the story. And when I do, the unexpected becomes essential, and the narrative unfolds.
My work is completely handcrafted. To me that’s integral to the process and the storytelling. I start by prepping the board with specialty paper that contains fibers, creating a subtle textural base for my layering. That makes the work become organic, almost like I’m mapping on flesh, bringing out the humanity of the piece. Then with every image, every snip and cut, every strange and magical juxtaposition, the story comes to life.
