Mr. Johnson’s work in several broad themes reference landscape and architectural forms with frequent symbolic elements. As a painterly gestural abstractionist working extemporaneously, his images are graphic, allusive, full of color and visually dynamic.

David Abel Johnson, a senior artist whose work has likewise matured, was born in 1944 in Hawley Minnesota. He has worked in Minneapolis since his student days at The University of Minnesota where he received his BFA and MFA both in printmaking. He has since worked in painting–acrylic on canvas and, now for many years, acrylic on paper.

Mr. Johnson is recipient of a National Endowment For The Arts Artists Fellowship, A Minnesota State Arts Board Artists Fellowship and a Yaddo Fellowship. He has had more than 35 solo exhibitions and over 45 group exhibitions including The Tweed Museum Of Art (solo) in Duluth, Bernal Gallery (solo) in Chicago, Forum Gallery in Minneapolis, Westbroadway Gallery (solo) in New York, and many college, university and art center galleries and is represented in many public and private collections. In 1980 he left a teaching career as Assistant Professor of Art and Art Department Chair at Bethel College (now Bethel University). He also taught at Northwestern College (now The University of Northwestern, St. Paul), Macalester College and The University of Minnesota.
