UWRF Makers Night: Hand Lettering Workshop
Leah Meilander is excited to join University of Wisconsin River Falls Makers Night to share her love of letters and teach the Art of Hand Lettering! You don’t need to be a student to join!
Students & guests will learn what hand lettering is all about, what you need to get started, and all the directions you can go with it. Spend the evening with some hands-on activities and exercises to try it out yourself and walk away with a set of your own hand-drawn cards you can give to friends, family, whomever!
What is Hand lettering? It’s the art of drawing letter forms. While it sounds straightforward, there are so many approaches and styles to explore—which means there are so many applications for it, too!
We’ll start with an introduction to hand lettering (a bit of typography, a bit of calligraphy). Next, we’ll dive into the basics: techniques, letterforms, composition, balance, and experimentation. Then, we’ll spend time on some beginner exercises, sketching and illustrating letters and single words to explore different styles.
Finally, you’ll work on your first lettering piece of a single word or phrase that you’ll illustrate on postcards to take away from the workshop, along with the skills needed to continue practicing hand lettering on your own.
