Mental formations manifest and succeed each other like a river. When you look at the river you think that the river is one entity that remains very much the same. But that’s a mental construction. As we sit on the riverbank we see that the river we’re observing now is not the same river in which we just went swimming. Heraclitus said that you can never step into the same river twice. — Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddha Mind, Buddha Body
Join Compassionate Ocean Zen Center as we continue our study of how the mind works. We will explore the nature of consciousness and of mind states, using Thich Nhat Hanh’s presentation of classic Buddhist psychology as our guide. Topics will include perception and reality, habit energy, free will, and the cultivation of happiness. It will also include a study of the 51 mental formations, as developed in Yogacara Buddhism.
Experience with Zen or Buddhism suggested, though not required.
Pre-registration required.
