The Art of Handlettering
In this in-person workshop held at Minnesota of Book Arts (MCBA), you’ll discover hand-lettering techniques with step-by-step instructions and how to illustrate a word or quote of your choice.
Hand lettering is the art of drawing letter forms. While it sounds straightforward, there are so many approaches and styles to explore—which means there are many applications for it, too!
We’ll start with an introduction to hand lettering (a bit of typography, a bit of calligraphy). Next, we’ll dive into the basics: techniques, letterforms, composition, balance, and experimentation. Then, we’ll spend time on some beginner exercises, sketching and illustrating letters and single words to explore different styles. Finally, you’ll work on your first lettering piece of a single word or phrase that you’ll illustrate on postcards to take away from the workshop, along with the skills needed to continue practicing hand lettering on your own.
