Friedli Gallery presents “Sacred Klown” New Art by Shaun Chosa
“Sacred Klown” explores the intersection of traditional Native American imagery with contemporary pop culture. His vibrant and whimsical pieces are sure to delight and inspire. with an opening reception at Friedli Gallery on September 1st, 6-8pm. In this show, Shaun expresses what it means to be indigenous in the modern world, interspersing pop culture references with colorful imagery from his heritage. Shaun speaks to these truths through paintings such as “Dropping Knowledge”, featuring a cartoon logo of Native American mascot with a bomb dropping “Red Knowledge” speaking to how these mascots are appropriative, racist and silly.
“In modern times we can speak to our brothers and sisters all over the world. We are not gone, we remain, and we contribute as we always have. We flourish as we reclaim. Respect to the women and men who carried us forward when so many of our warriors sacrificed all. Respect to the survivors, and Respect to those still carrying our culture. There is no “I” in team, but there is “I” in tribe, and I am happy to be a part.”
Friedli Gallery’s mission is to be “An inclusive gallery and community space in Saint Paul, Minnesota. By an artist, for artists and our community.” and is “Art Centered, Artist Led.”
