Lanesboro Arts presents “Dappled: Growing Up With Shadow and Light”, an exhibition showcasing ceramic sculptures by Kordula Coleman. The show opens on Saturday, October 23rd with an artist reception from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.; the show runs through December 10th.  There will be hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages that visitors can enjoy outside in front of the Gallery, as well as live music. Always free and open to the public, gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

This body of work visualizes Coleman’s experience of being raised by parents with severe trauma caused by living in Germany during WWII and it’s aftermath. The collection is a monument to Coleman’s childhood and origin family and also to trauma survivors’ courage. The ceramics are a physical reminder of how wars affect generations of families, long after the war itself is over.

As Coleman says, “It is both disturbing and healing for me to go to that place, but I feel that it is important for me to figure out how their trauma has shaped me, and honor the love, warmth and positivity [my parents] were still able to give to their children. I also hope that turning these memories into sculptures and thus sharing them with the world will help others open up about similar experiences, and start valuable and instructive conversations.”

Coleman’s sculptural work focuses on human nature and the human body. This focus results in gestural, emotional creations that tell the viewer stories through the sculpture’s poses, facial features, gestures, or clothing characteristics. Much time and care is spent on facial features especially, creating emotional depth to Coleman’s work.

Kordula Coleman is a figurative ceramic sculptor who lives and works in Northeast Minneapolis. After immigrating to the US in 2000 from Cologne, Germany, Coleman rekindled her love for sculpting with clay. Coleman started sculpting at an early age and is a ceramic journeyman.
