Explore the art of calligraphy in this course for beginners. This workshop will introduce students to the Foundational Hand. This hand-written alphabet was developed by Edward Johnston in the early 20th century as a beginner’s alphabet and was instrumental in re-introducing the broad-edged pen (used by medieval scribes) to the modern world. This workshop will provide step-by-step demonstration and individualized instruction to help each student produce beautiful letterforms.
Students can apply what they learn about good letterforms to any number of broad-edged alphabets (Italic, Blackletter, Uncial – any of which can be studied in future workshops). Proper care of tools, good practice habits, spacing and layout, resources, and other calligraphic possibilities will be presented and explored as students open the door to this amazing art form. Materials will be provided and are included in the fee.
