About the Exhibition
Capturing the mystery of spontaneous compositions and natural elements intrigue artists Denise Presnell and Kristina Fjellman. Whether it’s an abstracted study or the fluid movement of the aurora borealis both Presnell and Fjellman attribute light, shadow, and color as primary to creating the layers of their work. Together their abstracted interpretations of the natural world create a surreal environment at once intimately familiar and fantastically new.
Using steel wire, fabric, paper and thread, Fjellman’s sculptural pieces often hover away from the wall making their shadow effects an important part of the art experience. “The illusion of movement created from seemingly static objects is an element I am constantly striving to achieve in my work.” – Kristina Fjellman
Presnell’s abstract, multi-media paintings are often a precarious balancing act between chaos and compositional control. In order to achieve control Presnell builds up surface layers, marks, and mediums, then systematically breaks it back down. “I try to leave at least some areas of my work with a glimpse of each step of the process – a sort of visual mapping of my decision making.” – Denise Presnell
