My current work explores landscape and site-specific places, both here and abroad. These photo/paint collages are a visual diary of places that have the most meaning and memory for me, and convey the passage of time. I photograph images over periods of hours, days, weeks or months. I deconstruct the photos, and then re-assemble the varying viewpoints and perspectives of places, creating a new composition that depicts the elements of a place I find most compelling. The photos I take trigger the accuracy or distortions of my memory. Histories, cultural traditions, and the atmospheric quality of light unique to each place suggest distinct palettes and compositions for the work.
Paint both unifies and differentiates the cut-and-pasted substrates of these paintings. The linear and irregular grid on which my paintings are based serves as both a formal structure for the compositions, and as a metaphor for the technological grid to which most of us are attached to and dependent upon—the separate “pixels” of our visual world that make up the whole.
