Sue Redfield – Wood Fire Ceramic Artist – Art Educator
Firing with wood is a marriage of the clay uniting with the atmospheric conditions of flames and wood ash. Aesthetically, I experiment with textures and accents of color on the clay forms reacting with the wood fire process. Inspiration comes from walking through the woods. I visualize the romantic ideal of each piece being like an individual fingerprint of nature: fallen trees returning back to the earth floor, fungi colors and textures, grasses, leaves, accents of colored flowers, rippling waters of the river meeting the blue sky.
My hope is that what I create will be an evolution of change and fresh response, just like the fallen leaves in autumn sitting through the winter season and evolving into the beauty of budding colors in springtime. My hope is that when someone is in contact with one of my pieces they will experience a sense connection to creation with hope and a sense of unfounding joy. Each day is a new learning curve to create closer to nature.
