Susan Gainen is a Whimsical Wildlife Documentarian and Abstract Painter whose work reflects a lifelong love of intense color and design, and an unreserved enthusiasm for dense and exuberant patterns. Her work is directly linked to tiny paintings made on Plaster of Paris eggs in the 1970s, two decades of tiny gardens where her garden philosophy was “start with wretched excess and scale up!” and five miniature needlepointed Oriental rugs which won Blue Ribbons at the Minnesota State Fair.
She discovered the magic of detail in 6th grade. When she couldn’t see the blackboard after being sent to the back of the room for being disruptive, it was obvious that she needed glasses. Between diagnoses and delivery, her Girl Scout troop had bird watching trip in Rock Creek Park. She saw nothing – not a bluebird or a red bird. “Delusional” wasn’t in her vocabulary, so she was disconnected to her pals’ experience. She got glasses the following Tuesday and could see every leaf on every tree and every blade of grass. It was magic.
Susan Gainen celebrates Chronological Enrichment, learning something new every day. Both her abstracts and creature paintings are a visual depiction of this metaphor: that every piece looks better because of the pieces that surround it.
