Surelle Strike (Schewe)

My art is heavily influenced by fairy tales, folklore, religious stories, and story telling. I mostly paint women, and I love to add symbolism to my work. I hope the artwork makes you wonder about the narrative, and the characters it portrays. The female subjects in my work are multifaceted, and as in real life, their stories are never as simple as they seem.

I typically paint with acrylics and have begun dabbling in oil. I love using layers and bright colors to reveal a form. Painting interesting shadows, tiny details, and painting hands are some of my favorite parts of the work! I’ve recently learned more about printmaking, and have started using linocut block printing. I love the fact that it forces me to simplify my drawing and color scheme. It brings me back to the classical fairy tale illustrations that I love so much! I’m working on a project idea that combines printmaking and painting, and have been doing a lot of experimenting lately.
