Sophia Weisensel makes oil paintings about the American Midwest. Born in rural Minnesota, she focuses on the small-town, big-sky landscape where she was raised. Weisensel is interested in coming of age, family and gender dynamics, and the complex, sometimes proud, people who are part of her upbringing.
Weisensel attended Bethany Lutheran College and received her BFA in 2019.
She then attended the New York Academy of Art where she recieved her MFA in 2021.
She paints and teaches out of a studio in the Holland Arts East Building in Minneapolis.
