I am Karen Caldwell, a self-taught artist whose work explores the beauty and complexity of the African Diaspora through a metamodern lens. My primary medium is acrylic on canvas and I describe my painting style as “ Abstract Afrocentrism.  I use the word “ abstract” as a figurative derivative of the verb’s meanings “to remove” or “to separate.

Through the use of bold colors and negative space, I centre the experiences of the African diaspora within our own historical, cultural, and sociological contexts. The purpose of my work is to dispel stereotypical ideas of blackness that exist in the mainstream, and I advocate for the re-centering of the black experience in everyday lives.
