The word religion comes from ancient Latin, meaning simply “to tie things together.” Many today feel it is synonymous with Christianity. I explore the similarities of Religious Art as they oppose Idolatry. I want to blur the lines between these two art forms, pushing their boundaries of both size and content. I make narrative Tableau referencing historical and fanciful elements. Using my observations on subjects like spirituality versus sexuality, straddling the invisible line that lies between the sacred and the forbidden.
I work in low-temp clay and found-object collage. My work references artifacts from diverse cultures. Tombs, shrines, icons, fetishes, and reliquaries are all inspirations for my artwork. It gives me great solace to do work that pays homage to the antiquities of past cultures and religions. Decoration, intricacy, extravagance, death, and decay form a careful mix in my work.
