Wool means home to me. My family in Argentina works in the yarn wholesale business, and I grew up watching my mom, grandma, and aunt knit. In 2020, after I emigrated to Minnesota, my art practice evolved from film production to fiber art, working mainly with the material that has always been part of my life: wool.
But, what does “home” mean for an immigrant? A concept tied to territory, culture, family, and community, now, boundless and full of contradictions. Art became a refuge, a way to feel at home in the world, transforming loss, pain, and dislocation into a tactile visual expression. A woven tapestry of cultures, memories, and stories.
In my weavings, organic shapes play in dialogue with geometric forms, softness with roughness, raw materials with mass-produced fibers, and plain textures with dynamic three-dimensions. They are created with multiple techniques and on multi-sized frame looms with an assorted type of yarn and repurposed materials.
The gesture of weaving itself, moving back and forth until the vision unfolds, holds another layer of meaning; but it’s also a manifestation of a time-honored labor that links diverse communities from around the world. Even when I start a piece from a sketch, there’s always the autonomous gesture, the physical act of weaving that is transformative and essential.
