Karen Caldwell is a self-taught artist whose work delves into the beauty and complexities of the African Diaspora. With an artistic perspective grounded in metamodern philosophy, she uses her canvas to encapsulate the essence and experiences of people of African descent across the world.

Born in London and having lived in Barbados in the Caribbean, she now resides in the Twin Cities. She uses her broad cultural experiences to weave together the common threads of the diaspora through her creative narrative.

Caldwell’s medium of choice is acrylic on canvas, and she refers to her resulting works as “Abstract Afrocentrism.” The term is derived from figurative meanings of the verbs “to remove” and “to separate,” which she uses to distance the viewer from stereotypical perceptions of blackness pervasive in Western culture.
Through her bold use of color, Caldwell offers insight into the experiences of transnational and diasporic communities. Her art acts as a catalyst for re-centering the black experience in a more heterogeneous light in the minds of everyday people.
Caldwell’s goal is to take viewers on a journey into the different elements of Afro-culture through the use of abstract techniques that prompt them to see the subject matter beyond the stereotypical perceptions prevalent in everyday society.
