I choose landscapes and structures (buildings, cabins, homes, etc.) as my subject matter because of the stories they tell us. I think about the people who were there before me and what they saw. Why did someone build a home at the end of this hike, with this particular view? What is it about this backyard fence that someone was thrilled to see every day of their lives? Why did someone choose to build a signpost here? Why did someone choose the exact, careful wording on this building that they did, when it could have been so generic instead? These are the types of questions I ask myself as I photograph scenes around me, which are then turned into paintings in the studio.
To create my paintings I use canvas and oil paints. I love the tenderness of a paintbrush as it glides across a canvas, strokes landing like butter. The thicker the paint the better. I also have an affinity for frames and match or build custom frames for many of my pieces. For me, art radiates through the edges of its container (or lack thereof) and a proper pairing can set the tone. Casual, attention-seeking, vintage and glittery – I like to say that my paintings and their frames all have their own personalities! Which is why you will see so many different styles.
I make my art because I want to spark people to think outward about experiences and places in our world and who made them/why. Plus, life is too short not to own a little piece of something that brings you joy. 😉
