Joseph Poppy is a Minnesotan Abstract Artist. At an early age, he was influenced by the shapes, textures, lines and the colors of his surrounding environments and found a way to use that inspiration to communicate a truer voice through his work.

His time studying with local Minnesota Artists’ Jeff Millikan [photography and installations at the U of M, 1991 – 1997], Reid Galey [plein air painting, 1998 – 2003], Jon Neuse [abstract and collage, 2003 – 2005] and Ellen Richman [abstract expression, 2006 – 2013] have also influenced his work and his ability to, “convey a feeling that draws a viewer into [his] paintings, creating a unique connection with them.”

His preferred medium is acrylic and oil on canvas. He holds residency at the Northrup King Building in Northeast Minneapolis and has participated in many student shows at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts and the University of Minnesota. He participated in juried shows at the pARTS Gallery [1st place in 1995] and the Minnesota State Fair [2nd place in 2013, 3rd place in 1996].

Joseph is an on-going participant at the Northeast Minneapolis Art District’s annual Art-A-Whirl [2013-2022]. His work has been featured on the cover for publications Rain Taxi Magazine and a book of poetry titled, Clatters, and is featured in private and corporate collections throughout Minnesota.
