As a Biracial Latine person, my art has always been a way to find myself, to process, to connect my inner farm kid with a love of creating. I take inspiration from my family’s land and let creative whims turn into earrings of our ancestral corn, or paintings of the beans that have been in our family for decades. I think of my art as a point of connection, even more so with beadwork, I find that I feel closer to my Latine culture. It can’t be stressed enough how much creating has helped untangle thoughts and given mental stability and clarity to my world. Much of my beadwork at the moment is influenced by the birds (chickens) my family raises. I’ve just started participating in markets this year, and the joy of someone finding a funky pair of chicken earrings, a piece of art I made, and feeling seen in something as small and seemingly insignificant as a piece of jewelry has brought a new feeling of joy that I feel compelled to continue to explore.
