Our Red River Valley farm was my first studio, nature my teacher. Lacking art instruction but armed with a good imagination, I watched nature make art with light. It was an amazing lesson and making things with my hands was very satisfying. I was to realize later that those formative years planted the seed for the dream of an artful life.
The journey since then has been an important lesson in commitment. Gaining a “formal” education was to stretch over 51 years. As a parent of 4, art fairs, commissions, and cleaning houses provided income. I gained a proficiency in most mediums during that time of meeting deadlines and went on to have a studio. That space allowed me to host a weekly figure drawing group, draw regularly, and interact with other artists.
The early sticks and stones have since been replaced by Arches hot press paper and Baltic Birch wood, while the need to create with my hands has endured. Working en plein air has kept the rich visual memories of my youth ever present. They have grown into my work, like markers, and continue to re-introduce me to the profound sights and sounds that were never truly absent. Those moments of first and last light of day, when nature’s presence seems most intense, have served as my principle subject matter. My search has been to “do drama from the ordinary”.
