Statement

I make art to connect with the creative, intuitive energy that often waits long stretches of time while I do all the responsible grownup things. So when the opportunity to play arrives, I tend to let her roam wherever she likes. My art practice is a genuine ‘freedom practice’ that resurfaced in 2020 at a time when I needed it most.

I’m drawn to abstracting botanical and landscape subject matter with endless possibilities for color, texture and movement. My work tends to take a dreamlike quality, contrasting softness with slices of the unexpected. I sometimes refer to my art as ‘visual poems’ stemming from my love affair with language and contemporary poetry. You’ll find typography and bits of poems hidden in the nooks and crannies.

As a late bloomer without a fine art degree, I set aside striving for perfection and enjoy working fast, often on paper, using an eclectic array of tools, mediums, and materials, including collage from vintage ephemera and abandoned projects. I make art more for the way it makes me feel to make it – contemplative and cathartic. And that kind of medicine is what I hope is translated to the viewer.

About

With over 25 years of service to civic, nonprofit and personal development organizations, I’ve cultivated a professional career growing mission-driven brands. I’m a multi-disciplinary leader and military veteran who is currently coaching entrepreneurs and small business owners to build visionary brands, articulate compelling messages and navigate the tech that gets them seen and heard by lifelong customers.

In 2016, I founded Of Ink + Insight, a creative coaching practice and incubator for intuitive writing workshops called Insight Writing® which promote the development of mindful behaviors and the free expression of one’s inner dialogue. I use brief coaching, motivational interviewing and active, contemplative practices like art-making, photography and writing to elicit student self-inquiry and insight.

In late 2020, motivated by the existential crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, I turned toward a lifelong desire to create visual art. Beginning in watercolor and pastel, I embarked on a self-guided journey to explore a wide variety of mediums, techniques and applications, with strong leanings toward mixed media collage and abstract botanical paintings.

In 2021, I became an emerging artist member of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association and have started to submit work for exhibit or sale, beginning with the 2022 NEMAA 10×10 public art fundraiser.
