Who is CasSa?

CasSa is a versatile artist specializing in portraiture and seascapes, seamlessly shifting between photorealistic precision and expressive, free-flowing techniques. His work reflects a dynamic balance between rational detail and raw emotion. Over the years, he has exhibited at various art fairs and completed hundreds of commissioned pieces, earning recognition for his ability to capture the essence of his subjects.

Born in Chile in 1972, CasSa has lived in Iraq, England, Mexico, and the United States, experiences that have deeply influenced his artistic perspective. From an early age, he was drawn to the challenge of conveying mood and unique details in his work. His professional name, CasSa, is a fusion of his parents’ family names: Castillo Santander.

CasSa has spent years refining his craft, studying classical techniques and experimenting with different styles. His artistic journey began with masterpiece replication, leading to a signature approach characterized by bold brushstrokes and fluid movement. Today, he is focused on fulfilling private commissions and contributing his talents to charitable causes.

Subjects, Mediums, Styles, and Techniques

CasSa is renowned for captivating portraits that evoke deep emotion and evocative seascapes that transport viewers into moments of adventure and nostalgia. His maritime works immerse the audience in scenes ranging from tranquil ocean vistas to the raw power of a storm at sea.

His preferred mediums include acrylics and charcoal, though he also works with oil pastels, ink, watercolors, soft pastels, graphite, and markers—anything but oil. His artistic influences range from John Singer Sargent, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and Caravaggio to Claudio Bravo, Thomas Somerscales, Vermeer, and Francis Bacon.

Most of CasSa’s work is created “Alla Prima”—an approach in which the piece is completed in a single session. His techniques range from highly detailed realism to loose, expressive strokes that suggest form rather than define it.

Among his artistic experiments are:

  • “Topographic” portraits – Layered compositions inspired by topographical maps and navigation charts, adding depth and dimension.
  • “One Line” pieces – A technique where an entire image is drawn without lifting the pen, using continuous lines to form shadows and shapes.

Through these methods, CasSa continues to push the boundaries of his art, blending precision and spontaneity to create visually compelling and emotionally resonant works.
