As a multimedia painter, my work explores the relationships between the physical human body and the virtual realm. To begin this exploration, I have been both experimenting with painting on dead laptops as a painting substrate, as well as rendering the image of laptops a repeating subject matter within the paintings themselves. The concepts of my work are built through chosen image, text and material.
During my time at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, two courses that have greatly influenced my work have been The Body Eclectic and Image and Text, both courses taught by Genevieve Deleon. InThe Body Eclectic, I was introduced to concepts that focused on the theoretical body, this led me down the path of exploring virtual bodies and the relationships between art as object and body. Image and Text introduced me to language poetry and the contemporary art movement, Net Art.
I am fascinated by the politics of privacy, connectedness, surveillance and the spreading of information that surrounds internet culture. During the Covid-19 pandemic, people around the globe were forced into quarantine with relying only on networking technology to stay connected to the outside world. This moment in time allowed me to reflect on my relationship and roles I occupy as a user of these machines to the direct effects they have on my body and mental health.
