Susan Armington works in painting, mixed media and imaginative map-making. She creates art as small as a peanut and as big as a moose, often incorporating bits of stories through handwriting or collaged texts. Her art has been exhibited regionally, nationally, and internationally. She has received three “Artist Initiative” grants from the MN State Arts Board in 2004, 2009, and 2013, and numerous other grants for her work with communities through Talking Suitcases ,™ a project she leads to bring people together to create art and share their life stories. In 2012 she was commissioned to create life-size figures of youth for International Labour Organisation and the United Nations in Geneva. In 2014, her Talking Suitcases™ project was part of an exhibit in Shengyang, China called “Half the Sky: Intersections in Social Practice Art. In 2017 she led a project to collect interviews about the poet Robert Bly and made 3-D artworks for exhibit in The Robert Bly Study, in Madison, MN.   Her art is on currently on view at Friends of the Mississippi Office, Shir Tikvah Synagogue, the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization, the St. Croix Watershed Research Station, Brookview Community Center in Golden Valley, Beth Jacob Synagogue, and the Bilingual Education Center , Northwestern University, IL.

Susan grew up on the East Coast, where she studied foreign languages and linguistics and met her Japanese husband, Yuichi Kubota. She taught English in Japan for 2 years at the National University of Tsukuba, before returning to Minnesota to study art at the University of Minnesota and in the WARM Mentor program.
